Celebrating National Storytelling Week at Tops Pokesdown

Nothing beats a story.
And few stories beat The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which I was delighted to read to children at Tops Day Nurseries in Pokesdown as part of National Storytelling Week. Watching their eyes light up reminded me just how magical stories can be for young minds.
It was a lovely reminder that stories aren’t just words on a page — they’re windows into a new world. And when we share them, fictional or not, we’re passing along empathy, language, and creativity. Children who listen to or read stories often learn to see the world from different perspectives; a skill that grows into compassion as they get older.
Stories spark curiosity, ignite imagination, and ultimately help shape the way young minds engage with the people and places around them.
During my visit, I spoke with Nursery Manager, Stephanie Ridealgh, and Tops Founder, Cheryl Hadland, about everything from potty training to childcare funding. Their focus on hands-on learning and limiting screen time really stood out; I’m convinced that simple, real-world experiences are key for children’s development.
I’m often asked why I visit nurseries. Simply, I know how important early years are to a child’s life.
Whether it’s improving playgrounds, making sure tech doesn’t overwhelm childhood, or scrutinising children’s wellbeing legislation in Parliament, I want every child in Bournemouth to get the best start possible.
Thank you to everyone at Tops Pokesdown for welcoming me so warmly.
